As this audio unit comes to an end, I reflect on how it has deepened my understanding of audio techniques—when to use them, how to use them, and their importance in storytelling. Throughout this unit, I listened to podcasts, watched YouTube videos, and read various articles to expand my knowledge and connect more with the world of sound, especially in preparation for our trip to Chile.

I had the opportunity to create my own stories, experiment with sound, and remix different audio elements, which is essential in digital storytelling. This hands-on experience helped me appreciate how sound shapes narratives, evokes emotions, and immerses listeners in a story.

Audio Storytelling

While looking at the use of audio in storytelling while creating my post “What is Audio”, and listening to Ira Glass talk about audio in storytelling, I’ve learned that there are two key elements of storytelling that are enhanced by audio: the anecdote, which engages the audience through a sequence of events, and the moment of reflection, which provides deeper meaning. Glass also discusses how a strong story balances both, ensuring it captivates while also resonating emotionally. Additionally, Glass emphasizes the effort required to find compelling narratives, stressing the importance of persistence and high standards in selecting stories worth telling.

These insights have deepened my appreciation for the craft behind great storytelling. Whether in podcasts, news, or even social media, powerful audio storytelling isn’t just about what is said—it’s about how it’s structured, how it connects with listeners, and how it leaves a lasting impact.

Reflection of Podcast Story

For my podcast assignment, I listened to the story “Cliffhanger” from the Spooked podcast. This podcast was very helpful in understanding the different types of audio that go into digital storytelling, such as music, narration tone and style, and various sound effects.

The audio components in this podcast really heightened the sense of fear and made the story feel even more eerie. These elements helped pull the listener in and keep them captivated, showing how sound can enhance storytelling and create a truly immersive experience.

My Own Audio Storys

A Trip Through Sound – In this assignment, I used various audio elements—such as a woman speaking Spanish, background conversations, cars driving, honking, and a band playing—to simulate what it might feel like to walk through the streets of Chile. My goal was to use these sounds to transport the listener, creating an immersive experience.

I paired these sounds with a narrative about someone walking through the streets of Santiago, describing what they encounter, see, and hear along the way. This combination of ambient sound and storytelling helps bring the scene to life, making the listener feel as if they are truly there.

Breaking News– In this assignment, I used Colossyan.com to generate an AI-narrated news story about the Moai statues on Easter Island and the strange events unfolding there. To enhance the realism, I included a news intro jingle for both the opening and closing, along with other sound effects that fit the story’s atmosphere.

Alongside the news audio, I incorporate

d a narrative from the perspective of a young boy witnessing the mysterious movement of the Moai. This combination of news-style reporting and storytelling helped create an immersive and engaging experience for the listener.

Nature Travelogue – For this assignment, I used various sound clips of nature—like the sound of walking through grass, the wind blowing, birds singing, and more—to complement a narration about what it’s like to be in Torres del Paine. The combination of these natural sounds, woven together with my voice in between, created a rich and immersive audio experience that really conveyed the feeling of being surrounded by the mountains and wilderness of Patagonia.

By pairing the sounds with a story told from someone’s perspective, I was able to add an illustrative storytelling element. This helped bring the experience to life, allowing listeners to connect emotionally to the landscape, not just through the sounds, but through a personal narrative that grounded the entire journey.

The result was a nature travelogue that didn’t just describe the environment, but invited the listener to step into it—feeling the breeze, hearing the wildlife, and experiencing the majestic mountains through the eyes of someone standing there, in awe of the vastness around them.

Daily Creates

As we’ve progressed through the semester, I’ve created a handful of Daily Creates allowing me to utilize different skills in photo editing and experiment with various software like Canva, Pixlr, Flickr, and more. These daily creates have been a fun and creative way to push my boundaries, explore new tools, and bring my ideas to life.

It’s been exciting to have the freedom to experiment without strict limits, allowing me to approach each project with fresh creativity. Most importantly, it’s been enjoyable, giving me the chance to combine learning with play.

Wrapping it up

Overall, in this unit, I’ve learned just how crucial audio is, especially when it comes to storytelling. Audio isn’t just an accessory to a story; it’s an essential tool that helps shape the experience. The sounds, the tone, the pace—all these elements can transform a simple narrative into something much more immersive. Learning about these techniques has opened my eyes to the depth of audio’s role in communication and expression.

Along with learning the theory behind audio techniques, I also had the opportunity to experiment with them firsthand. I explored various software and websites, testing different audio editing tools that allowed me to refine my skills. While there was definitely a learning curve at the beginning, the more I worked with these tools, the more confident I became. Each assignment gave me a chance to explore my creativity and experiment with new ways to convey emotion and atmosphere through sound.

What’s been especially rewarding is how much more aware I’ve become of audio in the media I consume. Whether it’s in podcasts, TV shows, or movies, I now notice how sound plays a major role in building excitement, tension, or even sadness. It’s amazing how much a well-placed sound effect or a change in tone can elevate a scene or a moment. Audio has the power to pull the viewer in, to make them feel something deeply. I’ve really enjoyed learning about the intricacies of sound and, most importantly, actually using it. I’m grateful for the experience and now have a deeper appreciation for how essential audio is in storytelling. It’s a tool that can stir emotions and create an unforgettable connection with the audience.
