As the Design unit comes to a close, I am excited to reflect on the knowledge and skills I’ve gained through these various assignments. Throughout these projects, I’ve had the opportunity to explore both Chile and Easter Island in greater detail, deepening my understanding of their cultures and significance. Additionally, I’ve honed my editing skills, learning new techniques and tools along the way. Overall, this experience has shown me the critical role that editing and thoughtful design play in creating work that is not only visually engaging but also polished and impactful.”
Design and Artistry
As the unit began, I took the time to explore what design truly is and what factors contribute to creating effective and visually appealing designs. In my post, ‘Design Tips and Tricks,‘ I delved into various design principles, with a focus on those outlined in Joshua David McGlurg-Genevese’s article ‘The Principle of Design.’ This resource significantly deepened my understanding of how essential design is and what makes a design truly effective, emphasizing the importance of balancing different factors such as aesthetics, functionality, and purpose.”
“We Are All Artists” by Tim Owens is a thought-provoking and reflective piece that inspires others to realize that creativity is a skill that can evolve and improve over time. Owens challenges the notion that creativity is something people are simply born with, emphasizing instead that it’s a capability that anyone can develop through practice and persistence. His message encourages individuals to embrace their creative potential, reminding them that artistic growth is achievable for everyone, regardless of their starting point.
Design Safari
I really enjoyed the Design Safari activity because it encouraged me to look at everyday objects and think critically about the various design principles integrated into them. It was fascinating to observe how these principles are applied in familiar items we often overlook. I also had fun seeking out different objects and images, analyzing them, and determining the specific types of design elements that were used in their creation. This activity helped me develop a more mindful and analytical approach to design in the world around me.
Four Design Assigments
I chose three different design assignments that I felt would give me the freedom to experiment and explore various skills, as well as opportunities to test out different extensions. These assignments allowed me to push my creativity and discover new techniques. In addition to these projects, I also created a newspaper article focused on Easter Island, which gave me a chance to apply my design skills in a more editorial context while learning about the island’s unique culture and history.
Design a License Plate – I crafted a license plate that I believe captures the essence of Santiago through the careful use of shapes, text, and color. I aimed to reflect the city’s vibrant energy and unique identity by choosing elements that represent its culture and spirit. The combination of these design choices helped convey a sense of place, making the license plate a creative expression of Santiago’s distinct characteristics
Create a Magazine Cover – I crafted a magazine focused on the cuisine of Chile, aiming to mimic the style of the popular food magazines often seen at grocery store checkouts. I wanted to capture the reader’s attention with a bold and eye-catching design while showcasing the rich variety of Chilean food, desserts, and drinks. My goal was to highlight dishes that truly encapsulate the flavors and culture of Chile. To achieve this, I used larger fonts and vibrant imagery, ensuring the magazine would be visually appealing and engaging for readers.
Are we There yet – For this design assignment, I created an image of myself posed in front of the iconic statues of Easter Island. I wanted to capture the mystical and magical essence of the island, so I added text that complemented the whimsical feel of the scene. My hope is that when I actually visit Easter Island, I’ll be able to recreate this picture in real life, bringing my design to life in a meaningful way. This project allowed me to experiment with blending imagination and reality while showcasing the island’s cultural significance.
Create a New’s Paper Article– Creating the newspaper article was an exciting activity because it allowed me to design something I could imagine someone picking up from a street newspaper stand and getting completely immersed in. I chose to write about the history of Easter Island, exploring not only its rich cultural background but also the intriguing mysteries surrounding the island and the statues that inhabit it. This project gave me the opportunity to blend storytelling with design, crafting a narrative that could capture a reader’s curiosity and interest.
Creating Day by Day
Creating Daily Creates has been a fantastic way to explore my creativity in a variety of ways. I really enjoyed the freedom to experiment with different programs, which helped me further develop my editing skills. The diverse prompts allowed me to think outside the box and approach each task with my own unique perspective. This flexibility made the experience both fun and rewarding, as I could interpret the prompts however I wanted and truly make each creation my own.
Personal Reflection
This unit has been a great opportunity to improve my editing skills while also learning about different design techniques and exploring the cultures of Chile and Easter Island. It was challenging at first to figure out how to make my designs visually appealing and easy to understand while also applying technical editing skills. However, the more I practiced and learned, the more comfortable and confident I became in my abilities.
I also enjoyed using tools like Canva, Flickr, and Pixlr throughout these projects. Working with these platforms consistently allowed me to become more proficient with them, enhancing my workflow and expanding my creative possibilities each day.
Conclusion
Going through this unit has made me even more excited for our upcoming trip, where I’ll get to see firsthand all the places and things I’ve been researching and editing. It’s thrilling to think about experiencing in real life what I’ve only seen through photos and designs. I’m also grateful for all the skills I’ve gained throughout this unit, as I know they’ll be valuable not only in other classes but also in different aspects of my life.
This experience has taught me to look at design with a more critical eye, paying closer attention to details like color, font, and images that work together to create a cohesive and impactful design. I now appreciate the thought and strategy that go into making effective visual compositions.
